BUILDING A SHIPPING CONTAINER HOME

Exterior

I feel that the appeal of shipping container houses is in the boxiness and industrial detail. The design challenge is in making these narrow steel boxes feel alive and open without modifying them to the point that diminishes them structurally or aesthetically. Opening are essential to breaking the sense of confinement but are structural liabilities and in this hot desert climate thermal liabilities as well. Our strategy was to only have a few openings but to double down and maximize the impact by aligning the doors to create outdoor spaces that flow inside. These parallel doors allow us to see through building and the breezes to wander in and out.

Floor Plans, Architectural Drawings, and Construction Documents

The Shipping Container House Plans are now available for sale as a full size PDF file. These are the drawings i used to get permits and build the house. I removed the survey for my property and the site plan since that is specific to my particular property.

Bathrooms

One of the interesting things about a tiny house is that the bathrooms tend not to be that much smaller than normal. For a house that actually meets building code a certain amount of space is required around toilets and for entering and exiting. here are the choices we made for these small but not tiny bathrooms.
